Call for papers: Vulnerable Societies — Migrants, Minorities, Risks and Responses

SSA Conference, Basel/Muttenz, 9–11 September 2024

The next conference of the Swiss Sociological Association is focused on vulnerable societies in the context of recent crises such as the accelerated effects of climate change, the invasion of Ukraine that led to large refugee flows and energy shortages, the Covid-19 pandemic, or growing global inequalities. Against the backdrop of major social, political, economic, and ecological challenges, the concept of vulnerability is often used in public debates. While descriptive in its core, vulnerability also has a normative side where calls to action to prevent and redress harm and social injustices ensue.

Immigrants and ethnic minorities are one group who are often called vulnerable, which implies that they are in need of protection and support. While the conference addresses vulnerability in its broad form to include technical, ecological, economic, political, and societal systems at risk of breaking down, we are looking for contributions focusing on human migration. In particular we are interested in empirical contributions that apply the concept of vulnerability, or related concepts such as resilience, agency, or adaptation. Contributions can examine the causes, forms, or consequences of vulnerability – or vulnerabilities in the plural. Studies may focus on individuals, groups, organizations, social movements, states, or supranational organizations that respond to various forms of vulnerability.

The conference will be held in German, French and English. Working language of the workshop is English.
